May 15 - John Fluevog Shoes

For 4orty-one years, our hero John Fluevog has been crusading against conformity, protecting against Satan, and trying his best to spread love and fellowship through unique soles for unique souls. International Fluevog Day is best described as some of the best parts of other, slightly less famous days. The love of Valentine's, mixed with the excitement of New Year's and the fellowship of St. Patrick's Day, pretty much makes Fluevog Day the best day of the year.

This International Fluevog Day promises to be bigger than anyone could have ever imagined, as neighboring vendors in all 13 major Fluevog cities, along with others as far away as New Zealand, are offering similar discounts and deals to help celebrate the greatest shoe shopping day of the year. (Check out the FRIENDS OF FLUEVOG DAY page to view participating vendors and discounts.)

Every year John gives away thousands of pairs of teal laces, stickers, and buttons through his retail stores worldwide, as annual traditions include wearing teal laces on the day of days. "I remember when we started with the teal laces in 1472, well actually it was just me wearing them," says John Fluevog. "You should have seen the people staring back then... it was like I was from a different continent! Now, every person I see on May 15th is wearing teal laces! It's incredible!"

Meanwhile, yo-yo artists and balloon makers are on standby across North America, while barbershop quartets are sharpening their harmonies. Last week, the nominations were posted for the Miss Flue-niverse Pageant, the Vatican City military (all eleven soldiers) practiced their annual Fluevog day salute, and the SMA (San Marino Airforce) tested out the Fluevog colours for the highly anticipated fly-by.

MISS FLUE-NIVERSE PAGEANT

Excitement has started to build this week in Rio de Janero, as they are hosting this year's Miss Flue-niverse Pageant. Emotions ran high last year as winner Miss Australia shocked the world with her controversial acceptance speech by stating "...it is about time John Fluevog has finally gone down under." This year's pageant will be hosted by musician Prince, who is expected to wear John's 4 inch-heeled Perry boots in silver. The Miss Flue-niverse pageant will be broadcast on most major networks around the globe on May 15th, at noon EST. Check your local postings for a broadcast in your area.

CIVIC RECOGNITION

Following Rhode Island's bold steps two years ago in making International Fluevog Day a state holiday, and other municipalities such as the Middlesex County in Massachusetts and Greenwich County in Connecticut jumping on board making every 15th of May a bank holiday, other cities across North America have since taken up the Fluevog Day cause. Fashionable cities across the world such as Boise, Melbourne, and Gatineau declared last year that International Fluevog Day should be paid holiday for all city employees. Other cities planning extravagant Fluevog Teal ticker-tape parades include Lima, Flin-Flon, Austin, and Yellowknife.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

In Vancouver, John's hometown, celebrations have already begun, but what other places have celebrated past International Fluevog Days?

To answer this prevalent question, Metropolitan Museum's History Curator Jeff Brodawka, discusses how important May 15th was for the tiny European country of San Marino in a recent Time Magazine article:

San Marino is an interesting case that most historians follow closely. The most notable person of historical interest from San Marino was Christopher Columbus's half brother Francesco Bottaro. Although Bottaro is credited in the discovery of San Marino II, a tiny island off the coast of Cuba pronounced 'Daan Maureeno', his real contribution was bringing slouchy boots for men into European fashion. According to illuminated transcripts of that era, Bottero was worshiped for his godlike footwear.

Every year since 1484, the country of San Marino celebrates Bottero's favourite day... International Fluevog Day on May 15th, which happens to fall on the birth of Bottero's mentor John Fluevog. Traditions passed down from generation to generation are honoured as parades of stiletto clad men and women march the hilly streets while singing in unison, and then feast on teal cannolis and zeppolis.

For those of you that don't know, Fluevog Day is best described as some of the best parts of other, slightly less famous days. The love of Valentine's, mixed with the excitement of New Year's and the fellowship of St. Patrick's Day, pretty much makes Fluevog Day the best day of the year.

Wherever you are this Fluevog Day, remember to cherish your friends, park your car, serve and be served, value your soul, leave small prints, and be Fluevogian by wearing your teal laces (oh, and show off your Fluevogs). This year, customers will enjoy FREE SHIPPING on web orders on May 14th and 15th. If you're near one of our 12 stores on the 15th, come by for the festivities, and receive 15% OFF REGULAR PRICE.
