Jaye Haworth is a graphic designer based in New Brunswick. Read on to find out more about this FluevogCreative winning artist in her own words!

Can you tell us a bit about your background as an artist?

I was born into a family in which visual creativity was celebrated and encouraged. My dad especially was a strong influence on the direction my career has taken. He had a full-time job to support our family, but his passion was drawing, painting and cartooning. He spent many evenings and weekends drawing the most amazing and detailed pen and ink political cartoons for local newspapers!

So as a child, I spent a lot of time drawing. Creating images has always been an important part of my core being, and I’ve been most fortunate to have been able to earn my living as a graphic designer — really and truly doing what I love!

How did you hear about FluevogCreative?

I discovered the FluevogCreative competitions shortly after I purchased my very first pair of Fluevogs (beautiful blue leather Dallas boots!), as well as a pair (short black suede platform booties) for my daughter. We’d just come through a long, tragic and very sad three years in our family, and were in need of some cheering up. Plus I wanted to thank my daughter for the wonderful support she was for me throughout that time!

It wasn’t quite within my budget however to be able to thank two other very special women who have been amazing supports in my life — my daughter-in-law (who is also the mother of my wonderful little grandson!), and my best friend — so when I saw the competition I thought perhaps I could earn Fluevogs for them!!

How long have you been Fluevogin’ for?

Since 2018 — the very first competition I entered was for the TWIST WATUSI.

What was the inspiration behind your piece, “Dance Your Way to the Finish Line”?

First of all, those beautiful pink shoes! They are so gorgeous and the pink is such a happy, energetic colour! Secondly, a longing for spring. Winters here in rural New Brunswick can sometimes feel endless, so I wanted to create something which would celebrate spring and that magical feeling of joy and lightness of being which it brings! And thirdly, I wanted to put to good use, at least a few of the more than 24,200 photos I’ve taken since my husband bought me a digital Canon!

Tell us a bit about your creative process.

For a project such as the Fluevog ad, I begin with the feelings the particular shoe stirs up. Certain songs will suggest themselves and I listen to that music. I go for walks outside while allowing these feelings and ideas to roll around inside my head and heart. I usually make a start and then set it aside for a day or so. Sometimes I sketch rough thumbnails, and sometimes I work through it directly on my computer. Thank goodness for layers!! I’m a faithful devotee of the Holy Trio: Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator!!! If my husband can take a moment away from his work in the pottery studio, I’ll show him where I’m at and seriously consider his input. He’s an excellent art director! I’m a little proud though, that when he looked at my finished concept for Fast Cars Mille Maglia, he was unable to suggest a single alteration!

Apart from art and design, what do you like to do for fun?

Well, I like to take lots of photos! I live in a really beautiful little corner of the world, and it gives me immense pleasure to walk through the woods and the fields, and along the creek — seeing, feeling, hearing and even smelling the different seasons — with or without my camera. I do a little gardening too — I love the smell of the earth and playing a small role in the miracle of growth. It’s a real gift to be here.

And over the last 3 years, with my amazing husband, I’ve had LOTS of fun building our dream house! We’re doing most of the work ourselves so it’s been a little slower than we’d originally anticipated, but it’s been a wonderful experience and the realization that every single detail, every item in that house is there because we chose it, is very humbling, and at the same time very exciting! It still blows my mind!
