Q&A with Dr. Jen Gunter

[An edited version of this interview first appeared in Issue 19 of The Fluevog Post (Fall/Winter 2022)]

She’s one of our most prolific and outspoken fans and soon, Dr. Jen Gunter will have her very own namesake shoe, debuting this Fall/Winter ’22 where 15% of the sales will be donated to Moon Time Sisters! Graciously taking some time out of her busy schedule to chat with us, here’s what she had to say about her personal style, love of Fluevogs and of course, the shoes!

You’re well known for being outspoken about a range of topics in the science and health care industries, but how do you explain your real and concurrent reputation as a style guru?
I have finally stopped caring about what is on trend or how others think I look and am just going with what I like and what I feel good wearing. And perhaps that message resonates with people.

You’ve previously described your Fluevogs as being great icebreakers. Can you elaborate on why you think that is?
Almost every time I walk into an exam room to meet a new patient and I am wearing a pair of Fluevogs, I hear “Oh wow, I love your shoes” before I even get a chance to start the visit. So then I explain that they are Fluevogs, they are a Canadian brand with two stores in San Francisco, and we chat a little about my shoes, what shoes my patient likes, or what she likes about shoes. I also explain they are comfortable (I walk up 6 flights of stairs to get to my office), because a lot of people wonder about that, but that is the magic of Fluevogs. Style, sass, and comfort! I think the shoes let my patients see that I am a real person, which is helpful because people feel so vulnerable at the doctor, especially at the gynecologist. And the ice breaker conversation about shoes helps to settle nerves or just get the conversation started.

Dr. Jen Gunter is an OB/GYN and pain medicine physician who is also the author of The Vagina Bible and The Menopause Manifesto, as well as the host of the Body Stuff podcast. For more about her work and to see her Fluevog collection, follow her on Twitter @DrJenGunter or visit drjengunter.com.
