Sarah Turner is a talented 3D modeler and illustrator currently pursuing her BFA at the Northwest College of Art and Design in Tacoma, WA. She has a knack for making ideas come to life through sketches, digital paintings and digital 3D models.
Can you tell us a bit about your background as an artist?
I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I started off just drawing dinosaurs, but
have thankfully expanded my horizons since then. No matter what I’m drawing, I’ve
always felt driven to create and share stories. I’m so grateful for my family encouraging me to pursue art and illustration as a career. I am currently earning my BFA in Visual Communications at the Northwest College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Washington State. In just a few months, I will graduate and jump into my art career full time!
How did you hear about FluevogCreative?
I heard about FluevogCreative from my wonderful illustration professor, Susan, at
NCAD. She introduced our class to the contest, and encouraged us all to submit entries. It was such a thrill to participate in the competition, and it really pushed my creative buttons to finish my entry in time.
How long have you been Fluevogin’ for?
OK, full disclosure: I am a recently converted Fluevoger…much to my (more
fashionable) mother’s delight. There are so many unique designs to choose from, and I plan to be perusing the store much more often now. I look forward, as a newly fully-
fledged Fluevoger, to represent the brand in my daily life.
What was the inspiration behind your piece, “Find Your Funk!”?
The Twist Bop seemed like the perfect shoe to get down and boogie in. I was really
drawn to the color that popped from the sides of the shoe, and wanted to show the
energy of the shoe personified as funky disco girls. My design shows not only what
people might be doing in the shoes, but also who they might be. After all, aren’t we all yearning to indulge our wild side a little bit?
Tell us a bit about your creative process.
I almost always start working with a handful of quick, scribbly thumbnails that only I can decipher. Promising ideas rise to the surface as I cleanup, rework, and refine the
thumbnails. I always keep in mind the purpose and audience of the piece and work
toward those goals. I have to throw away the majority of my sketches, but that’s how I
weed out the bad ideas from the good ones! From that point on, it’s elbow grease, cups of coffee, and a drive to bring my idea to life.
Apart from art and design, what do you like to do for fun?
As weird as it sounds, I LOVE indulging in true crime documentaries. But I can only
watch them before nightfall; after that, the videos go from interesting to just plain
frightening. When I’m not scaring myself with true crime stories, I also enjoy drinking tea and Skyping with my boyfriend.
