John Gerrard is a multi-disciplinary artist from Calgary, AB. Although an active musician, and photographer, John’s focus is painting. His style with this medium is characterized by it’s unique blend of abstract and representative methods. Always experimenting with different approaches, John is versatile with his subject matter and colour choices, sometimes creating ultra colourful work, and other times working with a restricted black and white palette.
John is inspired by the business of life, often choosing reference photographs that are immensely detailed. There is an energy and illusion of movement in his landscape work that creates a rich viewing experience. His lines and brush strokes allude to the reference material, but ultimately take on a life of their own.
John’s process is a deeply intuitive one that takes its cues from gut feelings. Transforming images with paint, John sees himself as a third variable, mediating between what comes in from external sources and what emerges in the painting. This and other triadic functions, fascinate him and allow him to incorporate intellectual elements into his practice.
Black White And Grey – Vol. 1 is in exhibit from August 2 – September 29, 2016
