FluevogCreative: catching up with the chosen

When you become a FluevogCreative winner, your name and artwork is forever imprinted in our collective Fluevog memories. We recently caught up with some of our former winning artists who offered up a few fun stories and words of wisdom for their fellow creatives.

Do you ever feel like you’re in a creative rut? What are some of your coping methods or remedies to this?
Holly Pierson | San Francisco, CA:
I would not say I get in a creative rut so much as run out of creative energy. I have multiple creative outlets so if I’m in a rut, I’ll just switch to another. A lot of my art comes from historical subjects, so if I’m stuck, I’ll visit a museum or do some research on a time period or subject that interests me.
Sarah Turner | Tacoma, WA: I give myself time to physically rest and recharge. I step away from my office and take at least a day off to sleep more, do chores, read, walk, etc. I also stop trying to force my way through the rut, and instead allow myself to simply consume content for a while.

What is the strangest project you’ve ever been involved in?
Holly: I recently participated in a project that brought artists and burlesque dancers together during lockdown in zoom land. It was not really strange but it did bring together two communities that otherwise might not meet, and I really enjoyed being a part of it.
Sarah: I once had a client who wanted me to draw Will Forte from SNL and Jason Momoa in a boxing match with a couple different actors. It was a bit strange, but I didn’t ask any other questions and just drew what they wanted. When I sent the final illustration to the client and asked if there was anything they’d like me to revise, the only feedback I received was to “add more body hair.” To this day, I still wonder what context the drawing was used for, but I don’t think I want the answer.
