Canadian shoe designer John Fluevog on 45 years in the biz: ‘They were strange shoes. They were unusual. And people bought them’

This year, Canadian shoe designer John Fluevog celebrated 45 years in the business. Fluevog’s eponymous footwear brand has become well known at home and abroad for its whimsical, irreverent approach to show design — you know a Fluevog when you see one — and its unfailing commitment to quality and customer service. “You know when you look at something and it feels right to you?” Fluevog said in an interview recently. “I know when I get it right. I can see people trying them on, and I can see what they feel like when they try them on. I like to think that my shoes are all about people feeling good.” But despite his 45 years of success, Fluevog’s start was unconventional. The Post’s Rebecca Tucker spoke with the Canadian footwear icon recently about getting his foot in the Canadian fashion industry’s door.
