  On November 8th, 1946 beauty school & salon owner Viola Desmond was arrested for sitting in the white-patron only seating in the segregated Roseland Theatre in Nova Scotia. Viola was forcibly removed from the theatre, jailed overnight, and convicted of tax evasion for not paying the one cent difference for the black seating in the balcony. Viola contested the court decisions and after the Nova Scotian court upheld the decision against her, Viola closed her beauty shop and eventually moved out of Canada. Viola's courageous protest was the first significant step in equal rights for all, and helped spark The Canadian Civil Rights Movement.
