While visible wear may be a testament to the fabulous journey you’ve been on with your Fluevogs so far, proper shoe care can keep them looking their best for many more adventures to come. Because Fluevogs are so varied when it comes to construction and material, it can feel tricky figuring out what that care looks like. But don’t worry, we’re here to help!
In this Fluevog Shoe Care blog post, we’ll be diving into the fundamentals of how to care for standard leather shoes. Standard leather — used to craft many Fluevog boots — is a beautiful and supple material. While not as specialized as oiled or patent leathers, it still requires proper care to maintain its quality and longevity.
CleanING Your Leather Shoes
Proper shoe cleaning techniques help extend the lifespan of your Vogs. Before you start applying products to your shoes, it’s crucial to remove any loose dirt and grime. Do this by using a soft brush or a damp cloth to thoroughly wipe down your shoes. Be sure to let your shoes dry completely before proceeding. Remember, a dirty cloth proves the necessity of this step!
Shoe Conditioners
Think of shoe conditioners as lotion for your Fluevogs. It keeps the leather moisturized and prevents cracking. Apply a generous amount of a high-quality shoe conditioner or leather conditioner like our JF Cream, to a clean cloth or applicator brush. Work the cream into the leather using small circular motions, ensuring even coverage. Pay special attention to creases and areas prone to dryness.
How To Polish Your Shoes
Polish is like makeup for your shoes. It adds a beautiful shine, but isn’t as vital to the health of the leather as shoe conditioner is. After the conditioner has had time to absorb — a few minutes is usually enough — apply a small amount of shoe polish to a separate cloth or brush. Again, use circular motions to work the polish into the leather for professional shoe shining results.

An Important Note on Colour Matching
When using coloured creams or polishes, remember that exact colour matching can be challenging. Fluevog offers a wide range of colours, but slight variations may occur. For multi-coloured shoes, consider using a neutral cream or consult with a Fluevogologist for personalized advice. A good strategy is to start with lighter colours and work your way to darker ones.
Brushing and buffing
A horsehair brush is ideal for buffing your shoes as it doesn’t retain product build-up as easily as other materials. Use long, even strokes to bring out your shoes’ natural shine. You’ll be surprised at the difference simply brushing your Fluevogs can make!
How often should you condition and polish your shoes?
How often you condition and polish your shoes depends on how often you wear them. If you have a go-to pair, you’ll need to care for them more frequently. A good rule of thumb is to check the creases — if they feel dry, it’s time for some TLC.
